Although BV isn't an actual STI it is more common in women who are sexually active. It is a common cause of vaginal discharge. Some women notice an increase in symptoms after sex. It is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria that are found naturally in the vagina. It is not clear why this happens.

Some women might notice changes in their normal vaginal discharge. There may be more of it, it may be thin and watery and there might be a strong fishy smell, especially after sex.

It can sometimes be caused by perfumed soaps and bubble baths, vaginal deodorants. Douching (washing out the vagina by squirting liquid into it with a tube or nozzle) is not recommended. Wearing knickers that have been washed in strong detergents and smoking can also cause problems for some women.

Symptoms are often mild and it may clear up without treatment. However, if necessary, a course of antibiotic tablets/gel may be prescribed.

Genital herpes is an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus. This is the same virus that causes cold sores on the mouth.

It is caught through direct skin contact with an infected blister or sore, ie during sexual intercourse with someone who has an infected blister or oral sex with someone who has an active genital sore or cold sore on the mouth.

Symptoms include small, fluid-filled blisters anywhere in the genital or anal area, on the buttocks and the tops of the thighs these quickly burst to leave ulcers. You may also have flu-like symptoms like tiredness, fever and headaches. Genital herpes can be treated by taking antiviral tablets that can reduce the severity of your symptoms and may reduce the time you have the symptoms for.

They can be flat or smooth small bumps or quite large, pink, cauliflower-like lumps and can appear on the penis, testicles and around the vagina and anus.

Most warts are easily diagnosed by a doctor/nurse and can be treated by freezing them (cryotherapy) or using a cream/liquid yourself.

The most common STI in the UK - in Cheshire East about 1 in 10 men and women under 25 years have the infection. Chlamydia affects both men and women and is known as the silent infection due to its lack of symptoms.

Signs to look out for include discharge from the penis, pain when peeing and painful testicles in men, while the girls may have an unusual vaginal discharge, pain when peeing or during sex and bleeding between periods.

If left untreated it can spread to other parts of the body and cause pain, especially in the abdomen, and may lead to infertility (being unable to have children). You dont need to have had lots of sexual partners to be at risk.

Chlamydia can be caught if you don't use a condom during vaginal and anal sex, and also through oral sex. It can also be passed on to babies at birth.

Chlamydia is easily tested for and easy to treat you dont need to be examined. The test uses a urine sample (or for females only, a swab you do yourself). Chlamydia can be treated with antibiotics.

This is another common STI it's easier for men to know if they got Gonorrhoea than it is for the girls. In some cases, there might not be any symptoms but look out for a yellowy green discharge down below, itching or discharge from the anus, a sore throat, pain when peeing for girls and painful, swollen testicles for men.

Gonorrhoea is mainly caught through unprotected vaginal, oral and anal sex. But it can also be caught through rimming (licking someone's anus) fingering someone's vagina, anus or mouth then putting your fingers into your own, or even by sharing vibrators and other sex toys

Gonorrhoea can give girls pelvic inflammatory diseases, causing fever, pain, infertility and even ectopic pregnancies and premature labour. If left untreated gonorrhoea can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women. This may lead to pelvic pain, blocked fallopian tubes and infertility and ectopic pregnancy (when a pregnancy develops outside the womb). If left untreated in lads it can cause the testicles and prostrate gland to become inflamed which could affect fertility inflammation and pain in the testicles.

A Gonorrhoea test can be taken at the same time as a Chlamydia test through a urine sample or for women a self-taken swab may be used.

Gonorrhoea is treatable with antibiotics.

It may take a few weeks to sort your warts, but in the meantime you can protect you and your partner by keeping genitals clean and dry (but avoid using scented soaps, bath oils etc.) and using condoms.

It can also be passed on by using a needle or syringe which has already been used by someone who is infected with HIV. This test uses a blood sample.

Although there are drugs that can slow down the effects of HIV, there is no cure or vaccine.

is quite common. The skin develops small lumps which are pearly-white or slightly pink. Each lump (molluscum) looks like a small wart and is round, firm, and about 1-5 mm across. A tiny dimple often develops on the top of each molluscum. If you squeeze a molluscum, a white cheesy fluid comes out. In most cases fewer than 20 mollusca develop. Sometimes many develop over various parts of the skin. They tend to occur in groups or clusters.

It is caused by a virus which can be passed on by skin-to-skin contact. You can also be infected by touching things that have been contaminated by the virus, for example, by sharing towels or flannels that have been used by someone who has the condition.

Once one area of skin is affected, the mollusca can spread to other areas of your skin. However, most people are resistant (immune) to this virus. Therefore, most people who come into contact with affected people do not develop molluscum contagiosum.

Molluscum contagiosum can affect anyone of any age.

It is not serious and usually clears within 12-18 months without any treatment. Treatment may be considered if the mollusca are unsightly. Molluscum contagiosum is not classed as a sexually transmitted infection as such. However, sometimes the virus is passed on during the close skin-to-skin contact of having sex. If it is passed on whilst having sex then the first mollusca to appear tend to be on the skin of the lower abdomen and around the penis, vagina or anus. If this occurs then you should consider being checked out for sexually transmitted infections.

If you or your partner has mollusca, a condom should be used during sex. This will not completely stop skin-to-skin spread but will reduce the chance of passing it on considerably.

It is usually not the best to treat because:

The mollusca will usually go away without treatment within 12-18 months. Having mollusca does not limit your activities such as going to work, sports, swimming, etc.

Many of the treatments can be painful (such as liquid nitrogen).

Some treatments have a risk of burning the surrounding skin.

All treatments have a small risk of scarring the skin. But, scarring rarely occurs if the mollusca are left to go away on their own.
